The Gardens of Garden Ridge are a collection of unfenced plantings on both sides of the city’s library. Currently, the collection consists of the Butterfly Garden, the Rock Garden, the Shade Garden and the Iron Butterfly Garden. The Rock Garden is an interesting collection of non-irrigated succulents, skulls and decorative dead wood. It is also the bluebonnet and poppy backdrop to many spring photos of children sitting on the “the rock”.
In 2013, a small, combination butterfly/wildflower garden was planted by a citizen. It was designed to minimize the need for water and demonstrate the effectiveness of deer resistant and Texas Native Plants. In 2018, the Comal Master Gardeners accepted the gardens as a volunteer garden. In the first year, the original garden location was enhanced by creating larger beds, supplemented with the addition of the Shade and Iron Butterfly Gardens. Plants were added for diversity, as well as for host plants, food sources and shelter for butterflies and other pollinators. For public interaction and enjoyment, benches and arbors, various pathways and steps into the Butterfly Garden were constructed. In 2019, the gardens became a volunteer site for CMG Trainees.
The gardens are designed to become a demonstration garden to educate the public on the importance of pollinators in our world. These gardens differ from other CMG volunteer gardens in that Garden Ridge citizens join the CMG members for workdays each month. There is much knowledge, experience and fun shared between the two groups.
Come work or visit, and experience the beautiful, rocky gardens set among the Texas Native trees.
Workdays are a great day to visit the Gardens of Garden Ridge as volunteer workers will be happy to answer any questions you might have.
