New Life Garden pathway to the facility and along the way a bird bath sits surrounded by orange Day lilies and Scarlet Sage, Salvia coccinea, skull cap and Red Yucca.

The Butterfly Garden at the New Life Treatment Center, a home for girls aged 11-17, was begun in 2000 by Comal Master Gardeners (CMG), dedicated in 2001, swept away by a flood in July 2002 and rebuilt in October 2002. The goal was to improve the campus landscape and create an outside area for the girls to learn from and enjoy. The plants were donated by the Antique Rose Emporium and CMG members. Now called the Upbring New Life Children’s Center, the Center houses about 80 girls and contains a school that has grown in size as has the garden. The garden is around the flag pole and along the path the girls follow to school.

The girls have survived extraordinarily difficult circumstances and therefore have special needs. The Center is a closed facility with security for their safety. They stay an average of six to eight months with a goal of developing a restored sense of hope in their future.

Comal Master Gardeners continue to maintain the garden that was established 21 years ago and, in addition, have published a brochure to share with the staff and students about butterfly gardening. It contains information on butterflies, their habits, host plants and nectar plants. The garden provides the living examples.

Note: Because of security, visitors are not allowed at this garden.
