The Herb Special Interest Group (SIG) was started several years ago by some Comal Master Gardeners who wanted to learn more specifically about herbs.  The group has always been open to anyone who has an interest in herbs, although they might not necessarily grow them or have any experience using them.  The group is open not only to Master Gardeners, but to friends, family members and anyone in the community with an interest in herbs.

The group meets the second Monday of each month, usually in the AgriLife Extension Service Classroom at 325 Resource Drive off of Highway 46, but locations may occasionally vary. Topics are determined by the members’ interests and range from discussing individual herbs and spices and their uses to tangential topics such as their benefits, the use and making of kombucha, bee keeping, and healthy eating and living using herbs and spices.

The group is a “self-run” group and functions independently. There is no chair or leadership, per se. Members meet and decide at the beginning of a year on the topics and speakers for the year. There are no dues. Communication is handled by an email coordinator who serves the group by keeping all those interested informed about the meetings and topics.

The Herb SIG is primarily an educational effort; CMGs get CE credit for attending a presentation.  Monthly topics are listed in the CMG newsletters and in the weekly e-minders. Besides education, the SIG meetings also serve to form new friendships among attendees and to strengthen already existing bonds.
