The Mammen Family Public Library (MFPL) butterfly garden was enlarged and completely replanted in 2019 after the most recent library expansion. The population of host plants for caterpillars and nectar plants for adult butterflies consists of region-specific Texas Natives or Texas-naturalized plants. The plant list was compiled as a joint effort by the Comal Master Gardeners, Master Naturalists and the Native Plant Society. It also contains a fascinating new waterfall and Hill Country stream water feature bordering an ADA-accessible sidewalk to expand the number of library patrons who can closely interact with the plants.

It is designed to create a peaceful environment that attracts butterflies, as well as certain moths. It serves as an educational opportunity for children: to introduce them to the natural world of insects and pollinators, to highlight the unique butterfly-plant relationship and to aid in butterfly conservation. The Butterfly Garden environment is designed to be an outdoor haven for library patrons to read, relax and feed their soul as they enjoy the colorful and quiet beauty of the garden.

Workdays are a great day to visit the MFPL Butterfly Garden as volunteer workers will be happy to answer any questions you might have.
The Butterfly Garden has been a teaching garden for CMG for many years. It has been a treasure for Comal Master Gardeners and library patrons, as well as the entire community. The Butterfly Garden was initially designed and planted in 2009 by the Friends of the Library, Comal Master Gardeners, the Bulverde Garden Club, the River Crossing Garden Club and local Girl Scout Troops, at what was then known as the Bulverde Spring Branch Library. It remains a joint effort supported by the Friends of the Library, Comal Master Gardeners, and community volunteers.

The MFPL Butterfly Garden is a Certified Butterfly Garden and Certified Monarch Garden by the North American Butterfly Association.

Location: 131 Bulverde Crossing (near the intersection of Highway 281 and Highway 46), Bulverde.
