Insect EXPO is a hands-on, activity-oriented learning experience for fourth graders that is fun and interactive while reinforcing students’ science skills. Begun in February 2018, Comal Master Gardeners invite fourth graders from the New Braunfels and Comal Independent School Districts to a 2-hour self-guided tour of various activities at the McKenna Events Center in New Braunfels. The stations allow students to interact with professional entomologists and master gardeners as they participate in a wide variety of presentations and activities designed to explore the most numerous, widespread and diverse group of organisms on earth: Insects!
Activities include:
- Interacting with a beekeeper and tasting honey in the pollinator area
- Observing producers and consumers in the worm bin
- Exploring adaptations in the insect world
- Learning how pheromones initiate immediate behavioral responses in insects
- Experiencing a live insect zoo by petting a 4-inch millipede and a real tarantula!
- Learning how insects are beneficial to the Earth and humans
- Exploring insect life cycles, diets, habitats, defenses and their ecological importance
- Discovering the truth about how dangerous insects and their cousins truly are (or are not!)
- Learning about complete and incomplete metamorphosis
The EXPO features exhibits, demonstrations, crafts and activities with almost 1,000 fourth graders attending each year.
Because of Covid-19, Insect Expo will not be held in 2022.
