The Comal Master Gardeners host a Spring Gardening Seminar each year for the public and Texas Master Gardeners.  It is usually held on the first Friday of March to avoid competing with the multitude of garden events held in Central Texas during March, April and May and to coincide with the Spring planting season.

A different garden/plant related topic is chosen each year, and four speakers are invited to present topics related to the main theme. In the past, seminar themes have included gardening in a drought, growing tomatoes, pollinators, heirlooms and Superstars, orchids and other monocots, and gardening in all four seasons.  Some topics have included information on hummingbirds, monarch butterflies and insect pests, to name a few.

The registration fee includes the seminar talks, a seminar bag, morning and afternoon snacks, lunch and door prizes. The cost of the seminar is minimal so more people can attend.  The seminar provides time to shop with vendors featuring garden related products and plants.

Attendees have included Texas Master Gardeners from more than fifteen surrounding counties and further afar.  According to feedback, it is the highlight of the Spring season and an opportunity to put to use all of the information learned from seminar speakers, all of whom are experts in their respective fields.  Many of the speakers are associated with Texas A&M Horticulture Department and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, San Antonio Water System, Texas Parks and Wildlife and the Texas Forest Service.

The seminar in 2020 will be Comal Master Gardeners’ ninth year to host the event.  In three prior seminars, CMG was a co-host with master gardeners from Travis, Guadalupe and Hays Counties.
